Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn fired over inappropriate tweets

Director/writer James Gunn has been fired by Disney Friday for tweets regarding jokes about rape and pedophilia.

The Wrap reported that Gunn’s tweets from 2008 to 2011 were dug up by users, and a majority have since been deleted from Gunn’s account. Some of the tweets, which are incredibly vulgar, can be found in the report.

James Gunn has apologized in this Twitter thread and wrote in part, “I used to make a lot of offensive jokes. I don’t anymore. I don’t blame my past self for this, but I like myself more and feel like a more full human being and creator today. Love you to you all.”

Actor Dave Bautista, who plays Drax in Guardians, has come to Gunn’s defense on Twitter and said, “I will have more to say but for right now all I will say is this..@JamesGunn is one of the most loving, caring, good natured people I have ever met. He’s gentle and kind and cares deeply for people and animals. He’s made mistakes. We all have. Im NOT ok with what’s happening to him.”

There’s no word on what this means for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which still has a 2020 release window.
