It’s been 32 years since Tom Cruise’s Top Gun hit theaters and aroused millions of Americans and overseas audiences ($177 million at the international box office). On Friday morning, just after 1:40 a.m., Cruise posted a Tweet with the caption “#Day1”.
In The Hollywood Reporter’s post about the tease, they said, “The throwback picture shows Cruise’s iconic character looking at his F-14A Tomcat, with the words ‘Feel the need’ emblazoned over it, an allusion to one of the most famous lines from the original film.”
If you’re still lost, this means a follow-up to the 1986 classic is officially in production. Top Gun: Maverick is the sequel’s title, based on Cruise’s character from Top Gun, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. THR reports that director Joseph Kosinski is attached to the project, which makes me confident because I really enjoyed Oblivion.
Jerry Bruckheimer will return to produce the sequel, which is expected to hit theaters July 12, 2019.
