Box office for May 25-27: Solo underperforms during opening weekend

Director Ron Howard‘s take on the Star Wars universe with Solo sat well with me, but there’s no denying that Han Solo’s origin tale failed to perform at studio expectations during the three-day weekend.

Box Office Mojo reports that Solo: A Star Wars Story brought in about $83.3 million at the domestic box office from Friday to Sunday, which is surprising considering this is a Star Wars film. Comparatively, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story opened to the tune of just over $155 million.

Disney is reportedly expecting $101 million after the four-day Memorial Day Weekend is all said and done.

Solo will probably see little help from the international box office when it comes to worldwide numbers. During the opening weekend, Solo garnered $65 million overseas.

As for the rest of the field, Deadpool 2 finished second with $42.7 million, while Avengers: Infinity War finished third with about $16.4 million.
