On Monday, Netflix’s U.S. Twitter account announced that President Barack Obama and his wife, First Lady Michelle Obama, will be entering into a multi-year deal with the streaming giant.
In the tweet, the Obamas agreed to produce films and series for Netflix, which may include scripted and unscripted series, as well as documentaries and features.
There’s not much else to report other than I’m happily surprised. I have zero idea whether both Barack and Michelle Obama have moviemaking chops, but I’d imagine that these bits of art will be powerful and diverse.
The Hollywood Reporter released a video that quotes Barack Obama in a statement that reads in part,”… Michelle and I are so excited to partner with Netlflix. We hope to cultivate and curate the talented, inspiring, creative voices who are able to promote greater empathy and understanding between peoples and help them share their stories with the entire world.”
Hey, this is good news for Netflix, who has recently lost plenty of shows and films. I’m sure once the first project releases, subscriber counts will begin to trend upward.
