With the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel not until next year, Marvel and Sony are already in talks with actor Jake Gyllenhaal to play a popular villain in the Spidey universe.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gyllenhaal is in talks to play Mysterio. While nothing is confirmed just yet, it’s interested to note that actor Michael Keaton was also rumored to be in talks to play the Vulture in Homecoming, and we all know how that turned out.
What bringing Mysterio into the MCU may mean is that a Sinister Six roundup may be on the horizon. In Andrew Garfield’s The Amazing Spider-Man, they teased a possible Sinister Six adaptation for the big screen, with Rhino, Electro and what some felt was Mysterio during a post-credits sequence.
While most of this is just speculation, I think it would be foolish for Sony to again ignore bringing together the Sinister Six, especially after keeping Vulture (Keaton) alive at the end of Homecoming.
With Jon Watts on board to direct the sequel, this film may do numbers that far exceed what the first film did, especially after Avengers: Infinity War. And if actor Tom Holland gets to play Peter Parker alongside Gyllenhaal? Well, count me all the way in.
The Homecoming sequel is expected July 5, 2019.
