Early reviews are popping up around the internet for The Dark Tower, which opens Friday. However, many critics feel this tale, directed by Nikolaj Arcel and adapted from the Stephen King novel, fell short of the mark.
According to Metacritic, Dark Tower currently sits at a 39 with seven critic reviews, while Rotten Tomatoes has it at an 18% (four Fresh, 18 Rotten). Sure, more reviews will pile in, but early reception seems to have this film trending downward.
So what gives? Let’s read what some critics had to say:
A thoroughly average adaptation of some truly incredible source material.
It’s a competent and watchable paranoid metaphysical video game that doesn’t overstay its welcome, includes some luridly entertaining visual effects, and — it has to be said — summons an emotional impact of close to zero.
The 95-minute culmination of years-long efforts to bring “The Dark Tower” to the big screen is a complete disaster, a limp, barely coherent shell of a movie.
