The talk of Wonder Woman‘s record-breaking box office run has been documented all summer long, but the top two films this past weekend really raised some eyebrows.
Director Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, a WWII tale that simply took my breath away, and the surprisingly well-received Girls Trip (72 on Metacritic) brought home top spots, towering over Spider-Man: Homecoming and War for the Planet of the Apes.
Let’s take a look at the top 10, according to Box Office Mojo.
- Dunkirk $50,500,000
- Girls Trip $30,370,720
- Spider-Man: Homecoming $22,010,000
- War for the Planet of the Apes $20,400,000
- Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets $17,020,000
- Despicable Me 3 $12,714,475
- Baby Driver $6,000,000
- The Big Sick $5,000,000
- Wonder Woman $4,630,000
- Wish Upon $2,477,816
Notes: Valerian had a $209 million budget and, with this stumble out of the gates, the future for Luc Besson’s tale is bleak … Dunkirk, Girls Trip are two original films, not tied to a franchise, and brought home top-dollars (talk about impressive, and Dunkirk is the first film this summer to finish at number one while being an original tale) … While Wonder Woman fell to the bottom of the table, its unprecedented run at the box office turned many heads (largest domestic release this summer, topping Guardians Vol. 2), and its yet to open in Japan (Aug. 25) …
