Another weekend, another round of box office numbers. This time, however, theaters were screening what could be the highest-grossing film this summer with Spider-Man: Homecoming. I liked, not loved, the newest take on Peter Parker within the MCU, but this isn’t about my opinion — it’s about those dollar bills.
Box Office Mojo reported a strong opening weekend for Homecoming, which raked in $117 million. Of course, this placed it as number one for the weekend. In the grand scheme of things, however, this is the largest opening for a single character MCU film (Iron Man: $98.6 million). For 2017 thus far, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man comes in third for highest-grossing opening weekends, behind only Beauty and the Beast ($174 million) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($146 million). Wonder Woman ($103 million) sits behind Homecoming, which again proves that film’s box office strength.
Here’s the top five for the weekend:
- Spider-Man: Homecoming ($117,015,000)
- Despicable Me 3 ($33,998,875)
- Baby Driver ($12,750,000)
- Wonder Woman ($10,135,000)
- Transformers: The Last Knight ($6,300,000)
