$2.76 million paid for original R2-D2 unit

Yeah, you read that headline correctly: somebody paid over $2 million at an auction for a R2-D2 unit.

According to the Associated Press, the Calabasas, Calif. auction house Profiles in History sold a 43-inch R2 unit made of parts used throughout the Star Wars original trilogy. The unit sold for $2.76 million at an auction on Wednesday.

The auction reportedly included numerous Star Wars memorabilia, but the identity of who spent millions on the R2 unit was not revealed.

Some other items up for auction were Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber from Episode IV and Empire Strikes Back, which sold for $450,000. Darth Vader’s helmet from Episode IV also sold for $96,000.

So the moral of the story is: R2-D2 is an expensive date.
