Let’s address the elephant in the room: Transformers: The Last Knight greatly underperformed at the domestic box office.
According to Box Office Mojo, The Last Knight opened its weekend to $44.6 million domestically, the lowest opening weekend total of the series. For comparison’s sake, let’s take a look at the opening weekend numbers from highest to lowest, shall we?
- Revenge of the Fallen: $108.9 million
- Age of Extinction: $100 million
- Dark of the Moon: $97.8 million
- Transformers: $70.5 million
- The Last Knight: $44.6 million
Whew — talk about a drop off. However, to nobody’s surprise, the fifth Transformers film was given a pulse thanks to international box office numbers ($199.2 million total), more than doubling the domestic total.
Outside of The Last Knight, here’s how the rest of the June 23rd weekend shaped up:
- Transformers: The Last Knight: $44.6 million
- Wonder Woman: $24.9 million
- Cars 3: $24 million
- 47 Meters Down: $7 million
- The Mummy: $6 million
Notes: Wonder Woman continues to be a huge win for Warner Bros. and DC Comics, edging out Cars 3, which is in its second weekend compared to WW’s fourth weekend in the box office … The summertime is young, but by golly, there’s been a terrible discrepancy between the top three films and everything thereafter …
